We won! KIG has been turned down
Good news!
Secretary of State, Eric Pickles, has agreed with inspectors, at last year’s public inquiry, to refuse permission for the Kent International Gateway (KIG) at Bearsted. This vast 260 acre freight depot would have destroyed the character of the mid-Kent countryside around Maidstone. This is a fantastic result that is in large part due to the hard, hard work put in by CPRE Protect Kent and StopKIG members. Well done everyone, we couldn’t have done this without your support. We were up against a company that spent millions of pounds on lawyers, consultants and professors, but people power and common sense won through.
Less good news…
We’ve heard from the PR people for BIG that the backers of the similar rail freight scheme at Platt, Wrotham and Borough Green have welcomed the KIG decision and are ‘optimistic’ about progressing their own scheme. We think they haven’t got a leg to stand on, but we need to make sure that BIG gets the same fate as KIG. This means that your on-going support is more vital than ever. We are also fighting the expansion of Lydd Airport at public inquiry early next year so it is busy time ahead.
Thanks again for your support from all the team at CPRE Protect Kent: Hilary, Sean, Sandra, Brian and Gemma
